These topics are big for AP English classes. Students know that they are critical to them getting high grades, but not everyone knows exactly what is expected of an AP English essay topic. Here are some things that students can think about when preparing for a strong AP English essay topic.
You are most likely going to be required to take a test on the topic, which is why you are making a common mistake. You should consider putting together a study guide that includes facts about the topic. Writing an accurate study guide will help you get the information you need for your essay as soon as possible. Don't worry too much about the test, though, as there will be plenty of practice tests that are more than adequate. Think about what you are going to talk about and how many of the following types of public documents you will have to include. Obviously, these topics cannot be too broad or too narrow. They need to relate to the topic you plan to write about. A broad topic may be boring to students and will make it very difficult to think of the details. An example of a narrow topic would be a book report on a group of students who studied abroad. What is the basic premise of the historical document? What are the major points that you want to show? Do you need to discuss a certain event or place or change in society? Another important point to consider is if the topic was significant for American history. If you write about a foreign land, it needs to be relevant to American history. An important historical event, such as the Battle of Lexington and Concord, might be too broad to apply to the American Revolution. Speak for yourself. Students are busy adults, but they still can't think. Try to use the 'I' statement. Think about your life and what interests you. Don't be afraid to speak your mind, even if it isn't flattering to the subject. A student who has an honest opinion will be glad to share it with the class. Remember that the topic is mostly writing, so you need to come up with interesting statements and paragraphs. Make sure that you do not forget to include examples when using words or phrases. Most people have an excuse for using a word or phrase incorrectly, but this is a topic that you need to focus on. Avoid this mistake by proofreading your work often. Remember that it is not uncommon for a student to revise his or her essay before it goes to a test. This revision should be done before you start writing. After the final revision, the purpose of the essay is to figure out a topic that will appeal to the test taker, not to avoid the test taker from remembering the facts of the topic you used.
